Managing Side Effects

Potential Side Effects from Immunotherapy for Kaposi’s Sarcoma

The immunotherapy drug interferon can cause any of these side effects.

  • Flu-like symptoms, such as tiredness, muscle aches, runny nose, or low-grade fever

  • Abnormal liver enzymes

  • Mood changes or depression

  • Nausea

Other immunotherapy drugs can cause these side effects.

  • Fatigue

  • Loss of appetite

  • Low-grade fever

  • Nausea

Immunotherapy drugs can be highly toxic in people with CD4 counts less than 200.

The drug Thalomid (thalidomide) can cause nerve damage and tiredness. Sexually active men and women should not take it unless you use birth control, because it can cause birth defects.
