Understanding the Types of Hodgkin’s Disease

Finding out which type of Hodgkin’s disease you have is an important step in choosing the best treatment. There are 2 different types of Hodgkin’s disease. They are based on the way the cells look under a microscope and their immune characteristics. Each type may occur in different age groups. And while they are all cancer, they don’t all have the same prognosis.

Classical Hodgkin’s Disease (cHD)

Each classical type is treated in a similar way.

  • Nodular sclerosis (the most common form of Hodgkin’s disease)

  • Mixed cellularity

  • Lymphocyte-rich

  • Lymphocyte depletion

  • Unclassified (unable to place into one of the above 4 groups)

Nodular

This type may be treated differently because it grows so slowly.

  • Lymphocyte predominance (LPHD)
